What is Inpainting?
Inpainting lets you select a specific area of an image and regenerate just that part. The rest of the image stays untouched. It's like using an eraser and then having the AI fill in what you erased.
This is the most powerful editing tool in AI image generation — and the one most people overlook.
Common Use Cases
- Fix bad hands: The #1 problem in AI images. Mask the hands, prompt "detailed realistic hands, correct anatomy".
- Change facial expression: Mask the face, prompt "smiling face" or "serious expression".
- Replace objects: Mask an object, prompt what you want instead. "Replace the cat with a dog."
- Fix artifacts: Any weird distortion or anomaly — mask it, describe what should be there.
- Add elements: Mask an empty area, prompt what you want to add. "A butterfly on the flower."
How to Inpaint Well
- Mask slightly larger than the problem area. Give the AI context around the edges for seamless blending.
- Be specific in your prompt. Don't just prompt "fix this." Describe exactly what should appear in the masked area.
- Use appropriate denoise. 0.6-0.8 works best for most inpainting. Lower = keeps more of the original, higher = more freedom for the AI.
- Match the style. If the image is anime, prompt in anime style. If photorealistic, use photorealistic language.
Step by Step
- Go to the Inpaint tab on the Generate page
- Upload your image
- Paint a mask over the area you want to change (white = change, black = keep)
- Write a prompt describing what should appear in the masked area
- Set denoise to 0.7 (adjust as needed)
- Generate!
